Shanghai could be in line for a third general aviation airport before 2010, said Guo Youhu, deputy head of East China branch of the General Administration of Civil Aviation.

A general aviation airport is a public airport for all aviation other than scheduled airline and military flights.

Shanghai currently has two general aviation airports, Longhua Airport in downtown Shanghai, and Gaodong Airport which is close to Pudong International Airport and designed for marine rescue.

The two airports can not meet the rising demand from businesses, hospitals, hotels and private aircraft owners.

'An international metropolis like Shanghai should have five or six general aviation airports, 50 to 60 general aviation aircraft and 500 to 600 temporary landing spots,' said Guo.
