THE demand for long-distance train travel during the Spring Festival is far beyond the railway's capacity, officials at Shenzhen Railway Station said yesterday.
They are advising people to choose other forms of transport to leave Shenzhen if they have not yet booked tickets.
Long-distance trains departing from Shenzhen can only accommodate 510,000 travelers before the lunar New Year. In contrast, the Spring Festival travel office predicted that about 8.7 million people will leave the city before the festival, of whom 1.3 million will go by train.
Railway officials said that of the 510,000 long-distance tickets, more than 200,000 are reserved for migrant workers. More than 2,200 tickets are for students at seven colleges. The remaining tickets can be booked by calling 9510-5160 and 9602-0086.
However, the booking system is very busy, with most available tickets being booked within an hour every day. Tickets to Zhengzhou in Henan, Beijing, Wuchang and Hankou in Hubei, Changsha and Huaihua in Hunan, and Shenyang in Liaoning are the most sought-after.
About 30,000 tickets were reserved by telephone yesterday, and about 15,000 tickets for trains from Feb. 4 to 10 will be available today.
To meet the large demand from migrant workers in Guangdong Province to go home before the Spring Festival, the Ministry of Railway has transferred trains to Guangdong from other parts of the country, with Shenzhen one of the main beneficiaries.
A total of 31 long-distance trains, including 15 temporary sets for the festival season, will head to different cities from Shenzhen before the Spring Festival, in a bid to relieve the traffic burden.
