CHINA Southern Airlines will operate a chartered flight to take Hunan migrants home from Shenzhen next Friday. This is the first such offer in China, with 150 lucky migrants enjoying a free journey home thanks to the company.
Since the application hotline 8209-5000 was first published in Chinese-language newspapers Monday, some 2,000 people have called to register. The hotline, operated by the local volunteers' association, opens between 7:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. each day until Sunday.
Hunan migrants who are healthy, from poor families, with children at home and no criminal records can apply, according to Li Zhen at the airline company. Those who are from areas which suffered floods last year will also be given priority. Those who call earlier will have a greater chance of being picked as well.
The Hunan branch of the Communist Youth League of China and Hunan Satellite TV, co-sponsors of the flight, will have the final say on who is chosen.
The airline also has a hotline 95539 to answer questions on luggage and has printed brochures on boarding procedures to help migrants who are flying for the first time.
Stewards from Chenzhou and Xiangtan who speak Hunan dialect and can prepare Hunan-style meals will welcome migrants aboard.
'Though there are only 150 seats on the flight, the move is a good effort and shows that responsible companies are extending their care to the less advantaged,'Le Zheng, director of the Shenzhen Academy of Social Sciences, told the Shenzhen Daily yesterday.
The airline company is also cooperating with Sina.com to send a free chartered flight from Beijing to Hunan for migrants in the Chinese capital.
Meanwhile, Shenzhen has been picked by a CCTV 2 program as one of the top 10 mainland cities popular with migrant workers, according to media reports.
