THE country's economic planning agency said Sunday it approved a 15.3 billion yuan (US$1.97 billion) plan to expand Shanghai's Hongqiao International Airport.
The expansion will allow the airport to handle expected throughput of 40 million passengers in 2015, up from its current handling capacity of 9.6 million, the National Development and Reform Commission said in a statement on its Web site. The commission called the upgrade 'urgent and necessary?as Hongqiao International Airport is already operating beyond capacity and handled 19 million passengers last year.
