DANISH brewer Carlsberg A/S plans to build a 500 million yuan (US$65 million) brewery in China with Lanzhou Huanghe Enterprise Co., an official at the Shenzhen-listed brewer said yesterday.
Carlsberg and Lanzhou Huanghe Enterprise will each invest 200 million yuan in the plant, said the official, who declined to be named. A joint venture by the two companies, Huanghe Jianiang Beer Corp., will also invest 100 million yuan in the plant, the official added.
The brewery is expected to have a capacity of 500,000 metric tons, said the official.
The plan is still subject to approval by Chinese regulators.
The official said Carlsberg had also talked to Lanzhou Huanghe Enterprise's largest shareholder, Lanzhou Huanghe Xinsheng Investment Co., about raising its stakes in its ventures with Lanzhou Huanghe Enterprise and deepening cooperation in production and business operations.
Carlsberg has invested a total of 150 million yuan in its four brewery joint ventures with Lanzhou Huanghe Enterprise, holding a 30 percent stake in each of them, said the official.
Officials at Carlsberg weren't immediately available for comment, and officials at Lanzhou Huanghe Xinsheng couldn't be reached yesterday.
Analysts have said beer consumption in western China has been growing rapidly in recent years, at an annual rate of about 15 percent.
