- Government to study CPI data

INCREASES in China's consumer price index (CPI) have been high in recent months, but the government needs more time to study the implications of the data, particularly for February, People's Bank of China (PBOC) Governor Zhou Xiaochuan said Tuesday.
Zhou's comments underscore the central bank's vigilance against the risk of inflation. They come after the National Bureau of Statistics said earlier Tuesday that CPI rose 2.7 percent in February from the same month last year, after gaining 2.2 percent in January, raising the possibility of further tightening measures. The PBOC has set a CPI inflation target of under 3 percent this year.
