Longkou Port hosted its largest-ever seminar on management innovation last month.
Achievements in management innovation during the past few years were reviewed and commented on at the seminar, of which 15 are accorded publicity and made popular among employees and society as a whole.
New management models, including diverse financing strategy, new performance assessment system, and central competitive edge for company culture have provided an impetus to the port's development.
The past four years have been witness to the fast-paced development of Longkou Port.
The first five months of this year achieved a throughput of 10.3 million TEUs, an increase of 29.5 percent compared with the same period last year and a new record. All these figures are proof of the constant progress in Longkou Port's management innovation.
Management innovation at the port began four years ago.
At that time, it was developing at a slow pace and barely making profits.
Middle-level managerial staff conducted research on neighboring ports and studied their successful experiences.
After comparing and learning, they discarded stereotyped models, mindsets and working methods, leading to sweeping changes and great progress.
In late 2003, the middle management staff of Longkou Port's functional departments received their annual salaries based on performance assessment results. Before the reform, there was a gap of 30 percent between the highest and the lowest levels of staff.
Reformation in human resource and salary system was carried out in succession, including large-scale reformation of incentive mechanism and new strategy of competition for posts.
Thanks to all these efforts, the throughput of the year reached 7.64 million TEUs, of which bulk cargo made up 6.374 million TEUs and container capacity was 60,000 TEUs, both figures being the highest-ever reached by the port.
