- Apple puts limits on iPhone purchases

Apple Inc. has limited iPhone sales to two per customer and insisted on bank card payments on the phones to discourage resellers and guarantee holiday supply, media reported Sunday.
'Customer response to the iPhone has been off the charts, and limiting iPhone sales to two per customer helps us ensure that there are enough iPhones for people who are shopping for themselves or buying a gift,' Apple spokeswoman Natalie Kerris said.
Before the new policy was implemented Oct. 25, people could buy as many as five iPhones a person and pay in cash.
The company also said the limit and payment requirements will help discourage resales.
Apple said last week that more than 250,000 iPhones, out of 1.4 million snapped up in the first three months after its June launch, had been unblocked with pirated software so they can be used with any telephone network.
Hundreds of unblocked iPhones are for sale on the online auction site eBay, most of them for up to 600 U.S. dollars.
Apple had a deal granting the U.S. telecom operator AT&T exclusive rights in the United States for the iPhone, which can be used to surf the Internet and play music and videos.
