- Survey: more private tutoring hours, poorer results

BEIJING, Aug. 27 -- A survey conducted by the Shanghai education authority shows that students who receive more private tutoring tend to have poorer academic results.
The survey, which included 6,505 Shanghai students, shows that over 38 percent of middle and high school students had received private tutoring or taken lessons after school. The extra schooling hours were mainly devoted to subjects like Chinese, mathematics and English.
Students spend too much or too little time on their homework, the survey says, meaning students tend to gain poorer marks on exams.
The survey also shows that if the workload of teachers' assignment is at around one or two hours, they work best with students.
The survey also reveals that students without private tutors have the best academic results, while those who receive more than three hours of private tutoring a week tend to give poorer performances on their exams.
