- Domestic helpers to be trained abroad

FACING a ban on hiring foreign domestic helpers and increasing demands for high-end domestic helpers, a Shenzhen company has resorted to sending its Chinese domestic helpers abroad for professional training.
Shenzhen Filipino Employment Service Co. Ltd., a 2-year-old company, has announced a plan to send 30 potential domestic helpers to the Philippines for a six-month training program after the Spring Festival.
The domestic helpers are expected to work for rich locals and expatriates, with a monthly wage of 2,800 yuan (US$359), upon their return in August, said Ms. Xuan, who is in charge of the project.
The wage is close to that of a Filipino domestic helper working in the city and about three times as much as an untrained local domestic helper.
Most of the 30 domestic helpers are high school graduates from Hunan and Sichuan provinces, said Xuan. 'The threshold for the recruitment includes their education background, image and level of English,'she said.
The six-month training program will cost each trainee about 18,000 yuan, which covers the training, flight tickets, as well as food. The company will pay the cost in advance, and the domestic helpers will pay back the money as they earn, said Xuan.
During the training period, the trainees will have courses on English, moral values, domestic helping skills, as well as an internship in Filipino families, who will produce assessment reports.
Filipino domestic helpers, well known for their fluent English and rich experience, have become very popular in the city, although it is still illegal to hire foreign domestic helpers.
