Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Chief Executive Donald Tsang said here Wednesday morning that the HKSAR government will enhance the appeal of Hong Kong as an international convention, exhibition and tourism capital to meet intensified regional competition.
'The government will work more closely with the convention and exhibition, tourism and hotel industries to improve our competitive edge by seeking to host more mega international events,' he said when delivering, at the Legislative Council, the first Policy Address since his reelection as HKSAR Chief Executive in March 2007.
He said the HKSAR government will work with various sectors to promote exhibition and convention tourism, and provide participants and tourists with more quality facilities, services and entertainment.
On infrastructure development, the exhibition area of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center, located in the Hong Kong Island, will increase by 42 percent with the completion of the atrium link extension in 2009, Tsang said. Meanwhile, the government is considering to expand the Asia World-Expo (AWE) near the Hong Kong International Airport by increasing its exhibition area to 100,000 square meters.
Tsang said Hong Kong should make use of the 2008 Olympic Equestrian Events to attract tourists by vigorously promoting Hong Kong as a tourism and events capital.
In order to promote the city's brand, Tsang said he will ask the Financial Secretary to formulate strategies to revitalize Brand Hong Kong and step up publicity efforts highlighting Hong Kong as Asia's world city.
