A Shanghai government official says the city is considering reforming its policy of pursuing quantity in exports and will adopt new policies in favor of improving export efficiency.
At a municipal meeting on the construction of independent export brand name commodities, Vice Mayor Zhou Yupeng said the city's future priority should be exporting more Shanghai home-grown brands, high and new technologies, and high added value products.
Exports by Shanghai from 2001 to 2005 were almost double the city's total exports in the 20 years before 2001.
'Rapid export growth played an important role in promoting economic growth and increasing employment, but brought problems such as an energy supply crisis, more trade disputes and higher environmental costs,' said Zhou.
The city would encourage manufacturers to raise exports and professional foreign trade companies to cooperate more with industrial companies to export China's own brands instead of relying on charging meagre commissions from services for original equipment manufacturers.
Details of the new foreign trade reform policies are still under discussion, said Zhou.
The city did 207.2 billion U.S. dollars of foreign trade in the past 11months. Exports made up 104.4 billion U.S. dollars, up 24.6 percent, and imports came to 102.8 billion U.S. dollars, up 19.2 percent.
It is expected that the city's foreign trade will exceed 220 billion U.S. dollars by the end of the year.
