  • Nation vows to overhaul subsidies
    Date: 12-Apr-2007 Sources: (Shenzhen Daily)

THE government will make scrapping export subsidies that violate World Trade Organization (WTO) rules one of its priorities this year, a top trade official said in comments published yesterday.

The United States filed a WTO complaint in February against nine separate Chinese Government subsidy programs. On Tuesday, it filed two additional complaints on intellectual property rights and market access for films, music and other media. Wang Shouwen, head of the commerce ministry's foreign trade department, was cited by the (China Business News) as saying that the overhaul to the subsidies would be part of the government's efforts to shift policy away from actively encouraging exports to being more neutral towards them. Wang added that China would also review other subsidies that could be legally challenged, but he did not give a specific timetable.
