THE country's steel exports hit a record high in 2006 despite government cooling measures and anti-dumping investigations launched by trade partners, according to customs figures released Tuesday.
China exported 43.01 million tons of steel in 2006, up 109.6 percent year on year, while imports dropped 28.3 percent to 18.51 million tons. Net exports for the year reached 24.5 million tons.
(However, the country's exports of oil products fell 11.9% on year in 2006 to 12.35 million tons, the official added.
China's need for foreign crude is worrying global energy and security experts, who believe it is contributing to an unsustainable global energy future.
The chief economist of the International Energy Agency said Wednesday that continuing demand growth from China, along with neighboring India, would compound problems when non-OPEC production peaks within 10 years. In addition, new investment in exploration and production in major Middle Eastern oil producing countries is uncertain.)
