AN official with the Chinese quality control authorities believes foreign companies should be careful they do not import from illegal Chinese exporters as they tend to be the source of substandard products, the State-run media reported yesterday.
Li Yuanping, a senior official of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, in an undated interview with the China Daily, defended the safety of Chinese food exports through legal channels, by saying the government imposes tight controls on them.
'Foreign importers need to especially make sure that the products they are buying are in compliance with all requirements,'Li, director general of the Bureau of Imports and Exports Food Safety, was quoted as saying amid a spate of scandals over tainted products originating in China.
More than 56 percent of all substandard food products imported by the United States from China in April were illegal products, the newspaper said, quoting from quality control authorities' data.
Some importing countries, including the United States, do not require that the imported products come from officially registered plants and that they be accompanied by official certificates, which make illegal imports possible, Li was quoted as saying.
China has faced growing pressure to improve food and drug safety since some recent food safety cases came to light.
Wu Jianping, another senior official with the quality control authorities, said that a draft will be ready by the end of the year and will be in line with international practices, according to the newspaper.
