MANY hotels in Shenzhen have seen their occupancy rate rise due to the Chinese Import and Export Commodities Fair (Canton Fair) in Guangzhou, as many fair attendees are choosing to stay in Shenzhen to avoid the exorbitant hotel rates there.
Shangri-La Hotel Shenzhen, a five-star hotel near Shenzhen Railway Station, is fully booked until next weekend, and the hotel has raised the daily rate of a standard room or suite by 200 yuan (US$25.87).
'Many of our guests are exhibitors attending the Canton Fair and they choose to live in Shenzhen due to high hotel rates in Guangzhou,'said Antonio Zou, chief of the hotel's public relations department.
'The fair usually closes at five o'clock, and it takes about one hour for them to take train to Shenzhen,'said Zou.
'Beside convenient traffic, what is more important is that this can save money. In Guangzhou, they have to pay around 2,000 yuan for a hotel like this, but now they need to pay only 1,000 yuan for one room,'Zou said yesterday.
Located in Futian Free Trade Zone, Four Points by Sheraton Shenzhen has seen its occupancy rate rise by 20 percent since the weekend, its public relations manager surnamed Du said. Du attributed the increase to the Canton Fair.
During this year's spring and autumn sessions of the fair, Guangzhou hotels will continue to adopt the pricing guidelines set by the municipal government. The highest daily rate is 1,990 yuan for a standard room at a five-star hotel, and the lowest is 505 yuan for a two-star room. The new guidelines are 15 percent higher than in the same period last year.
Starting next year, the government will relax its control on hotel room rates.
