- Investment set aside for highway construction in Tibet

TIBET Autonomous Region will spend five billion yuan (US$625 million) on highway construction across the plateau region this year, about 20 percent increase over that of the previous year, said a local communications official. Zhao Shijun, chief of the regional bureau of communications, said that this year they will start construction on 10 highway projects and continue to build other road projects including upgrading the highway connecting Nepal. Zhao added that by 2010, the highways in Tibet will reach 50,000 km in total length, and roads to 80 percent of the 73 counties will be covered with asphalt.
