China saw a drastic decline for its monthly trade surplus in March to report only about 6.9 billion U.S. dollars, just about 29 percent of that recorded for February, the General Administration of Customs said on Tuesday.
The trade surplus for March represented a 38 percent decline compared with 11.2 billion U.S. dollars for March in 2006, and was a 70 percent plunge from February's 23.7 billion U.S. dollars, the second-highest monthly level on record.
The country's trade volume in March reached 159.99 billion U.S. dollars, up 10.4 percent from a year earlier, according to the latest figures from the administration.
Exports rose only 6.9 percent to reach 83.4 billion U.S. dollars year on year, a dramatically slower increase compared with that of February at 51.5 percent.
Meanwhile, imports increased 14.5 percent to 76.6 billion U.S dollars over the same period last year, a bit higher than that in the previous month.
The latest figures from the administration also showed that the smaller trade surplus reported in March, compared with February, was largely attributed to much more rapid growth in import.
The country's imports maintained a double-digit year-on-year growth rate to hit 76.6 billion U.S. dollars in March, indicating a substantial recovery compared with 58.4 billion U.S. dollars in February and 70.7 billion U.S. dollars in January.
The export volume rebounded a bit from February's 82.1 billion U.S. dollars, but was still lower than 86.6 billion U.S. dollars recorded in January.
