THE country would likely be a net coal importer in 2008 due to growing demand for imports and constraints on exports, the country's top economic planning agency said in a statement on its Web site yesterday.
The country shifted its position frequently between net coal exporter and importer this year due to volatile coal prices at home and abroad. China's coal imports were expected to grow moderately in 2008 to meet demand from new coal-fired power plants in the coastal region, said the National Development and Reform Commission in the statement, without giving a growth figure.
