- Nation becomes net coal importer

THE country became a net coal importer on a monthly basis in January after the government eliminated tax rebates on exports and domestic demand stayed strong.
China imported 4.7 million metric tons of coal in January, up 81.1 percent from the corresponding period of 2006, data from the General Administration of Customs showed Sunday. But the country's coal exports fell 20.4 percent in January to 3.29 million tons, the fourth straight month of year-on-year declines.
