CHINA'S crude oil imports surged 14.5 percent last year to 145 million metric tons or an average of 2.91 million barrels a day, according to an official familiar with the figures Thursday.
The increase is likely due to China's strong economy, the recent filling of its strategic petroleum reserves and the need to overcome stagnant production from domestic oil fields such as Daqing in northeastern China. China's crude oil exports fell 21.4 percent to 6.34 million tons in 2006, the official said. The country's oil products imports rose 15.7 percent year on year to 36.38 million tons in 2006, the official said, without providing a breakdown of individual shipments.
