- Coal imports jump as demand gains

THE country, which became a net importer of coal this year, increased purchases of the fuel 27 percent in April to meet higher energy demand in the world's fastest-growing major economy.
Imports climbed to 4.92 million metric tons from 3.87 million tons a year earlier, figures issued by the Customs General Administration of China show. Purchases last month outweighed exports of 4.46 million tons. Over the first four months, China imported a net 3.13 million tons of coal.
