  • Macao's natural gas import delayed to December
    Date: 11-Oct-2007 Sources: (Xinhua Online)

MACAO, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- Macao's natural gas import plan has been delayed until December, local media reported Wednesday.

The Macao Post Daily quoted Michael Tong Seak Kan, executive director of Sinosky Energy, as saying that the import scheme, which was slated to start by the end of October, has been postponed due to construction license application problems.

The high-pressure gas transmission pipeline was planned to cover a distance of 6.5 km from Hengqin Island in the neighboring Chinese mainland city of Zhuhai and the required pipeline construction license has been issued two months later than expected, Tong was cited by the newspaper.

Sinosky Energy, a joint-venture enterprise run by Macao Natural Gas and China Petroleum and Chemical, was granted a government concession in 2006 to import natural gas from the mainland.

A minimum of 130 million cubic meters of natural gas will be supplied daily after the completion of the infrastructure construction and 'the cheaper and cleaner' energy will be used to generate electricity, Tong told Macao Post Daily.

Macao has been using diesel generators to produce electricity.
