  • 10,000 Internet domain names lost due to quake disruption
    Date: 8-Jan-2007 Sources: (Xinhua Online)

Chinese Internet users lost about 10,000 dotcom Internet domain names due to disruption caused by the Taiwan earthquake.

The China International Network Information Center said about 10,000 Chinese users were unable to update data about their .com domain names and failed to re-register on expiry of their domain times.

Domain name servers were not responsible for domain names lost if the holder failed to re-register in the set period, said the center.

'Because the domain names are lost due to an act of God, enterprises and individuals involved may be appropriately compensated by the domain name server, but the scheme is still under discussion,' said an insider. There were few cases in which lost domain names were resumed.

Undersea cable connecting China to the United States was severed by the Dec. 26 earthquake off Taiwan's south coast, which caused Internet connection disruption between the two countries since.

A full service is expected to be resumed by Jan. 15.
