MICROSOFT China will further increase its research and development (R&D) capability in mobile Internet and hardware with the inauguration of its new campus in Shenzhen.
The Microsoft China R&D Group (CRD) Shenzhen Campus, which is located at Shenzhen Science and Technology Park, has nearly 300 research workers.
Two Microsoft research institutions in Shenzhen, namely Microsoft's Asia Hardware Center and Microsoft Mobile Internet Technology R&D Center, will move to the Shenzhen campus.
'The use of the Shenzhen campus by Microsoft's CRD will greatly increase Microsoft's research capability,'Zhang Yaqin, president of Microsoft's China Research and Development Group, said at an opening ceremony Monday.
Shenzhen has become Microsoft's largest and fastest-growing research and development center outside the United States. It had just four workers when Microsoft China established its research institute in Shenzhen four years ago.
After using the Shenzhen campus, Microsoft professionals will focus on research on mobile communications, Internet technology products and services, digital entertainment and servers and tools. Microsoft's Asia Hardware Center, which was established in 2004, has contracts with nearly 50 percent of Microsoft's hardware R&D projects such as mouse, keyboard, camera, household digital entertainment facilities and portable music players.
Microsoft China will increase its investment in professionals in this project on the Shenzhen campus, said Zhang, though he said he personally does not believe mobile Internet will completely replace fixed-line Internet.
