- Companies invest US$16.13b abroad

DOMESTIC companies' direct investment abroad reached US$16.13 billion in 2006, up 31.6 percent from the previous year, Xinhua reported late Wednesday, citing statistics from the Ministry of Commerce.
In 2006, domestic companies invested in a wider range of industries abroad, with 36.7 percent of the overseas direct investment in mergers and acquisitions, it said. The government has been encouraging local companies to invest abroad as part of efforts to alleviate the upward pressure on the yuan.
