QUALIFIED foreign institutional investors (QFIIs) held 97.1 billion yuan (US$12.49 billion) worth of yuan-denominated A shares at the end of last year, the China Securities Journal reported Friday, citing official data.
That helped QFIIs surpass brokerages to become the second-largest category of institutional investors in China, behind securities funds, as of end-2006, the report said. The QFII program, which was launched in mid-2003, allows approved foreign institutional investors to trade A shares listed on exchanges in Shanghai and Shenzhen. The report said insurance companies directly held 63.3 billion yuan worth of shares on the stock market at the end of last year, while the national pension fund directly owned stocks worth 56.3 billion yuan.
