  • Work starts on city's largest reservoir
    Date: 7-Nov-2007 Sources: (Shenzhen Daily)

CONSTRUCTION work on Shenzhen's largest reservoir started Wednesday as the authorities endeavor to meet the increasing demand for water in this thirsty city.

Upon its completion at the end of 2009, the 1-billion-yuan (US$133-million) Gongming Reservoir in Bao'an District will have a designed storage capacity of 142 million cubic meters, triple that of Shenzhen Reservoir.

It is expected to greatly relieve water shortages in the Guangming New Zone, a new high-tech industrial zone carved out of northern Bao'an. It will also be an important water resource for the whole city.

Three other big reservoirs will be renovated and several new storages will be built over the next few years to add about 500 million cubic meters to water storages.

Shenzhen has 196 reservoirs and Tiegang Reservoir is presently the largest, with a capacity of 49 million cubic meters.

Shenzhen is one of seven Chinese cities experiencing severe water shortages, despite abundant rain. This makes reservoirs even more indispensable for the city.

Statistics from the meteorological observatory said annual average rainfall in Shenzhen was 1,800 millimeters, allowing 1.872 billion cubic meters of water to be stored. But from 1998 to 2005, there was only 499 million cubic meters of rainfall stored each year, 14.6 percent of the annual total rainfall.
