GERMAN luxury carmaker BMW expects an 80 percent surge in its procurement in China this year to 3.6 billion yuan (US$473 million) as it expands its local supplier base.
The number of its domestic suppliers will increase to 100 by the end of this year, up from 60 last year, it said in a statement.
BMW, the world's largest premium carmaker, has teamed up with Brilliance China Automotive Holdings Ltd. to produce the BMW 3 Series and 5 Series in a venture with annual production capacity of 30,000 cars.
Local media reported last month that BMW and its partner were planning a second plant in the northeast, increasing their capacity to 50,000 units, although a BMW spokesman in China said discussions were continuing on a possible expansion of capacity and details had yet to be finalized.
BMW sold 10,177 cars in the first quarter in China, up 34 percent from a year earlier.
