- Rising energy demand boosts Huaneng profit

HUANENG Power International Inc., China's largest power producer, said yesterday first-quarter profit rose 5.7 percent as energy demand climbed.
Net income rose to 1.2 billion yuan (US$155 million) from 1.1 billion yuan a year earlier, based on domestic accounting standards, the Hong Kong and Shanghai-listed company said in a statement. Sales rose to 11.2 billion yuan from 10.1 billion yuan, Huaneng Power said. The company's electricity output rose 7.6 percent in the first quarter as demand increased, it said April 10. Power generation climbed to 38.9 million megawatt-hours in the first three months, it said.
