THE government has begun building the nation's largest solar power plant using concentrating photovoltaic modules as part of efforts to boost use of renewable energy, the Ministry of Commerce said Thursday.
The plant, in Xichang City in southwestern China's Sichuan Province, is designed to have a capacity of 10 megawatts compared with one in Shenzhen, which is currently the largest, with a 1- megawatt capacity, the ministry said in a posting on its Web site. Investment in the plant will total 60 million (US$7.9 million) and construction will be completed by the end of 2009, it said.
