MOBILE phones with built-in global positioning system capabilities will become a new trend in the market, analysts are predicting.
With the rise of the multimedia mobile phone and the advent of the 3G era, a report by the Beijing-based CCID Consulting, predicts sales of GPS phones will gather momentum and take a 20 percent market share in 2011.
At a forum on China's Information and Communication Technology organized by CCID Consulting in Shenzhen on Friday, insiders said they believe that China will become the world's largest growing market for the navigation industry in coming years.
'In addition to foreign manufacturers such as Samsung, Siemens and Nokia, which are now promoting GPS mobile phones, domestic mobile phone producers like Amoi Electroincs have unveiled phones with GPS capabilities, in cooperation or in partnership with Microsoft and Beijing Lintu Software Technology Co., and China Mobile and China Unicom have offered a mobile phone-based navigation service,' said Luo Wen, president of CCID consulting at the forum.
According to CCID's report, there were 480 million mobile phone users in China by the end of April and mobile phone consumers' after-sales services are attracting growing attention from all levels of the industry, becoming a focal point for operators, manufacturers and third party service providers.
In 2006, China's pre-installed static navigation GPS market grew very quickly.
A related market survey report shows that the vehicular GPS system use rate is as high as 59 percent in Japan and about 25 percent in Europe and North America. Many Toyota, Honda and Nissan car models are equipped with navigation GPS. In addition, Shanghai GM, Beijing Hyundai and Chery also started to install navigation GPS in their new cars. In 2006, 815,000 vehicles were equipped with GPS navigation equipment including 300,000 passenger cars with pre-installed static navigation GPS in China.
With the sharp increase in car ownership and the approach of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, China will usher in the golden age of GPS development, and this year will become a watershed between the development and popularization of navigation products, the report says.
