- U.S. warned against politicizing trade issues
Date: 11-Dec-2007 Sources: (Shenzhen Daily)
A SENIOR Chinese trade official urged the United States to stop politicizing commercial issues, domestic media said yesterday, at the start of a week of high-level Sino-U.S. economic talks.
The United States should resolve frictions with China through dialogue on an equal footing rather than seeking to politicize them, said Vice Commerce Minister Chen Deming, according to the China Daily.
'We should avoid unreasonably and unilaterally blaming the other side,'he was quoted as saying.
He warned that a trend for Americans to politicize trade issues could escalate as next year's presidential election approaches.
Chen was speaking ahead of the two-day Strategic Economic Dialogue, which begins tomorrow and brings a senior U.S. delegation headed by Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson to China.
The U.S. delegates would likely emphasize the Chinese currency, which they argue is undervalued, giving Chinese exporters an unfair advantage.
'The growing economic (interdependence) has expanded common interests and the scale of economic cooperation between the two sides,'Chen was quoted as saying by the paper.
'Thus, the two sides should clarify the responsibility each side should shoulder, face and resolve structural problems in the economy, and strengthen dialogue and communication.'
