FOUR gravely ill local children Tuesday became the first beneficiaries of the Jialiang-Southern Metropolis Daily Fund, set up by a Shenzhen man with the money he received in compensation after his son died in a road accident last month.

The charity fund was officially established Feb. 1 by Ma Yingdong, who runs a small business in Bao'an District. The fund aims to help children under 14 years of age from impoverished families. After the fund was set up, it received several applications for financial assistance.

Jiang Tao, 7, was diagnosed with leukemia a couple of months ago. With the cost of his treatment estimated at 300,000 yuan (US$38,660), the low-income family managed to raise 255,000 yuan through public donations after local media covered the boy's story.

On Tuesday afternoon, Ma arranged to give 20,000 yuan from the fund to Jiang Qing-chun, father of Jiang Tao.

'I really appreciate Ma's donation, which I think means more than any other offers,'said Jiang Qingchun. 'I am impressed by Ma's decision and respect him as a father. He still remembers many unfortunate children while he himself is still sustaining great agony and pain from his son's death.'

Jiang said he will visit Ma with Jiang Tao after the boy recovers.

Ma also donated 10,000 yuan to a toddler who is still in coma after falling from an elevator near Shenzhen Railway Station in Luohu District three days ago. Song Sen, 1, suffers serious head injuries after falling from the elevator in the station square. Song's parents are migrant workers in Shenzhen.

In addition, Ma gave 10,000 yuan each to Xu Jiahao, a toddler who was born with heart disease, and Xiao Jun, who sustained serious head injuries.

Ma Jialiang, Ma Yingdong's 7-year-old son, died Jan. 10 after he was run over by an unlicensed truck. The truck owner agreed to pay a total of 300,000 yuan to the Ma family as compensation with which Ma decided to set up a fund.

From the money he received, Ma has given 50,000 yuan to a local temple.
