  • New reporting requirements for university officials
    Date: 28-Feb-2007 Sources: (Shenzhen Daily)

FROM this year, Chinese university officials leaving their posts will be required to present a report on the economic policies they implemented and the impact they had during their term.

The new requirement was contained in a circular published on the Ministry of Education's official Web site, the Beijing News said Sunday.

The ministry said university officials should report on the authenticity, validity and effectiveness of the university's income and expenditure schemes. They must present their reports to their successors before they leave their posts.

The move came after the media exposed a number of corruption scandals involving university officials.

Earlier this month, the China Business News reported Yang Yulin, the president of a company affiliated with Nankai University in the Tianjin Municipality, was expelled from the Communist Party of China for financial misconduct.

Yang Yulin fled the country after being investigated for allegedly misusing some 400 million yuan (US$51.61 million), including 110 million yuan allegedly embezzled from the university.

Shan Ping, the former president of neighboring Tianjin University, was also expelled from the National People's Congress last November after allegedly misappropriating school funds and losing more than 37.5 million yuan on the stock market.
