Two employees with consultants Mckinsey Greater China's Shanghai office have been involved in a commercial corruption investigation, the China Business News (CBN) reported on Thursday.
The pair from the company's IT section and logistics department were alleged to have taken hundreds of thousands yuan from a suspect surnamed Wang to facilitate procurement deals early last year.
The case was still under investigation by the Shanghai Municipal Public Security Bureau, and had been confirmed by the Ministry of Public Security, the newspaper reported.
An official with the Mckinsey Shanghai office told CBN that the company had been cooperating with the police, but no more details were available.
Mckinsey would show no tolerance of the action if the allegation was confirmed, the company official was quoted by the newspaper as saying.
According to State Administration of Industry and Commerce, Chinese authorities tackled 8,233 commercial bribery cases in 2006, tripling the number of the previous year. The cases involved 1.46 billion yuan, up 60 percent year on year.
A survey launched by Anbound, a Beijing-based information consultancy, showed that foreign companies were involved in 64 percent of the 100,000 corruption scandals that had been investigated in China over the past 10 years, and the number was still rising.
A large-scale crackdown on commercial corruption showed China's determination to wipe out corruption and it was notably important for multinationals to operate within the law, said Professor Liu Junhai, of the Law School of the People's University of China.
