  • China says only seven pc buildings energy efficient
    Date: 19-Jan-2007 Sources: (Xinhua Online)

China has built 1.06 billion square meters of energy efficient buildings, but the figure represents only seven percent of the total floor area of existing buildings in urban China, the Vice-Minister of Construction said here Thursday.

At a press conference on the development of green buildings, Qiu Baoxing said that energy saving renovations of existing buildings were still limited to certain pilot regions.

The preset energy efficient objective 'has not been fulfilled,'he said without giving further details.

According to a survey by the ministry in 30 regions, the four municipalities of Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin and Chongqing are doing relatively well in implementing energy saving codes, but other regions fall behind in technological standards and government supervision.

Official statistics show that by the end of 2006, 96 percent of construction projects had been designed in line with energy saving codes and 54 percent of them had implemented the codes during the construction phase.

Still, the voracious energy consumption of buildings in China is ringing alarm bells. In Beijing, 22.4 kilograms of standard coal are needed to heat one square meter of a house, while in Germany less than nine kilograms of standard coal are required.

'The energy consumption of Chinese buildings is a huge problem,' said Qiu. He cited ignorance, unbalanced development between large, medium-sized and small cities, and structural obstacles as key factors in the problem.

In northern areas, heat metering and temperature control systems have not been installed and the development of energy saving technologies and products is very slow.

But progress has been made, Qiu noted. Energy efficient buildings constructed in urban regions in 2006 alone could save seven millions of standard coal annually and the floor area of buildings supplied with solar energy-generated light and heat amounted to 230 million square meters.
