PETROCHINA has started up a new pipeline connecting the West-East pipeline to users in central Hubei and Hunan provinces, parent China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) said Friday.
The link will help plug a demand gap in Central China but may add to strain on the 4,000-kilometer trunk line connecting northwestern gasfields with consumers in eastern China. It is pumping at full capacity but still unable to meet demand.
The new north-to-south Huaiwu pipeline connects Huaiyang station in Henan Province, on the giant West-East gas pipeline, with Wuhan station in Hubei Province on the Zhongwu pipeline.
The Zhongwu pipeline spans 1,300 kilometers and is used to transport natural gas produced in southwestern Chongqing Municipality to Hubei Province.
But despite an annual capacity of 3 billion cubic meters, it has pumped a total of only 1.35 billion cubic meters of gas in the past two years due to limited supplies, far below demand in Hubei and Hunan provinces, CNPC said on its Web site.
The 450-kilometer Huaiwu line, with an annual capacity of 1.5 billion cubic meters, can transport natural gas in both directions, giving PetroChina the flexibility to move its gas more freely to cater to changing market demand, CNPC said.
PetroChina is adding more turbines and compressors to boost the capacity of the West-East pipeline, which went into operation in October 2003, by 40 percent to 17 billion cubic meters by September 2009.
Last year natural gas output from the country's largest producer jumped 23.5 percent, with a big portion of the increase coming from western regions such as Xinjiang and Qinghai.
