Beijing's economy grew by 12 percent last year to 772 billion yuan (about 99 billion U.S. dollars), making it the eighth consecutive year the Chinese capital's economy has recorded double digit growth, an official said on Wednesday.
Vice director and spokeswoman of the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Statistics, Yu Xiuqin, said that the city's tertiary industry, which is the service sector including transportation and education, grew the fastest.
Tertiary industry grew by 540.5 billion yuan (about 69 billion dollars), or by 11.9 percent last year. It accounted for a record 70 percent of Beijing's gross domestic product (GDP), said Yu, adding that in 1995 tertiary industry accounted for just over half of the capital's GDP.
Primary industries, which is the agriculture sector, and secondary industries, which is the industrial sector, grew by 0.6 percent and 12.6 percent respectively, Yu said.
