THE city government awarded two logistics companies 500,000 yuan (US$62,500) each for 'creative service in 2006' Thursday, the highest awards for the logistics industry.

China Merchants Logistics and Hercules Logistics and Forwarding Ltd., both leading companies in the city, won the awards, government officials announced at an awards ceremony Thursday.

The Shenzhen Municipal Government started to award successful logistics companies in 2005 to boost the industry, which is regarded as one of the four pillar industries of the city, together with high-tech, finance and culture industries.

Last year, the city government subsidized logistics companies and projects to the tune of more than 50 million yuan. At Thursday's ceremony, Vice Mayor Zhang Siping said the government subsidy would cover more companies in the future to cultivate a group of logistics companies that are 'creative, technology-intensive and competitive.'

The city government also announced 300,000-yuan subsidies on 22 companies and loan subsidies ranging from 90,000 yuan to 2 million yuan for 11 companies at the ceremony.

The municipal government has been enhancing its support for the logistics industry in recent years. In 2002, it established a team to guide the industry. The city government's No. 1 paper for this year attached great importance to the high-end service sector, of which modern logistics is an important part.

The city's modern industry is expanding at a double-digit speed. The city now has more than 3,000 logistics and transportation companies, eight of which were on the list of the top 100 Chinese logistics companies made by the China Logistics Industry Association late last year.

Last year, the total output of the city's logistics industry reached 137.4 billion yuan, up 41.4 billion yuan from a year before, official figures show.

Shenzhen plans to invest 103 billion yuan on logistics infrastructure from 2006 to 2010. The investment is expected to increase the output of the logistics industry by 82.2 billion yuan annually.
