  • 2007 could be a turning point for pollution in China
    Date: 6-Jun-2007 Sources: (Xinhua Online)

The emission of major pollutants in China will decrease in 2007, said a senior environmental official here on Tuesday, who is optimistic the nation can reach the pollution control goal set for 2010.

'This year will be a turning point in China's pollution control. And we will achieve the goal of reducing the emission of major pollutants by 10 percent during the 11th Five-Year Plan period (2006-2010),' said Zhang Lijun, deputy director of the State Environmental Protection Administration, at a press conference.

China failed to reach its goal of cutting the emission of sulfur dioxide and chemical oxygen demand (COD), a measure of water pollution, by 2 percent in 2006.

Pollutant statistics for the first quarter of this year have not yet been published. But estimations based on local government reports show that the emission of sulfur dioxide dropped 0.3 percent, compared with the same period of last year, despite a sharp increase in high energy consumption projects, said Zhang.

However, the emission of COD during the first quarter rose 0.4 percent, Zhang said.

The new figures released by SEPA on Tuesday show that China discharged 25.89 million tons of sulfur dioxide in 2006, up 1.0 percent, and COD rose 1.5 percent.
