THE Ministry of Land and Resources has certified the reserves at Sinopec Corp.'s Puguang gas field at 356 billion cubic meters, China Central Television (CCTV) reported, well below earlier estimates of around 500 billion cubic meters.
The proven deposits still make the field the country's second largest, but the CCTV report on its Web site did not explain how it knew the reserve figure. The higher estimate, enough to meet more than eight years of current demand, had been given in a report in early March by Xinhua, citing the company. As China is investing heavily in exploration in a bid to reduce reliance on imported energy, it is possible that more reserves will be certified.
