POWER shortages will peak at 1 million kilowatts during the current second quarter in Shenzhen, the Shenzhen bureau of trade and industry has predicted.

Current power shortages in Guangdong have totaled more than 3 million kilowatts since the start of the second quarter. However the bureau will try to guarantee electricity supplies to households and important industrial users, Yin Yong, deputy director of the bureau, said. The high power demand has been caused by rising temperatures and continuous fast economic growth, as well as the reduction in power sent to Guangdong from the Three Gorges project.
