- Ex-general manager of Moutai probed

THE former general manager of China's best known liquor maker is under investigation on charges of taking bribes linked to a company tour of World Cup football games, domestic media reported.
Qiao Hong was until recently general manager of Shanghai-listed Kweichow Moutai, maker of Maotai, a pungent grain-based liquor.
Qiao is being investigated by anti-corruption officials in Guizhou Province, Xinhua reported Saturday, citing investigators. He is accused of taking bribes from organizers of a trip to the 2002 football World Cup in South Korea for favored company employees, Xinhua reported.
Party leaders in the mountainous southwestern province decided Friday to place Qiao under 'double designation? meaning he must be available to answer charges at any designated time and place, Xinhua said.
The announcement followed confusion over whether Qiao, in his mid-50s, was facing investigation or promotion. Local officials said earlier that he had been transferred to the Guizhou State assets administration.
But an investigator said that transfer was simply intended to protect the company from fallout.
'This showed the government's and the involved agencies' devoted concern for Maotai and the stock market,'the official told Xinhua.
The Party investigation is not the same as a legal inquiry, but if claims are borne out they often lead to criminal charges.
