MORE than 80 middle school students from six international schools in South China performed drama, band and choir at Shekou Theater in Nanshan District on Saturday evening, demonstrating what they had learned during a three-day cultural convention last weekend.
The six schools, including QSI International School of Shekou (QSI), Shekou International School (SIS), International School of Sino-Canada (ISSC), Xiamen International School (XIS), American International School of Guangzhou (AISG), and Utahloy International School of Guangzhou (UISG), are members of the Association of China and Mongolia International Schools (ACAMIS).
With the theme 'Born to be free,' the ACAMIS cultural convention this year was hosted by the QSI.
'When we realized the scope of what we wanted this convention to be, we realized very quickly how actively involved our community would become,' said Val Nathanson, a QSI teacher who acted as cultural convention coordinator.
This year's convention offered a variety of specialty groups and elective workshops in fine arts, drama, choir and band for participating students.
Students discovered the arts they participated in here at the convention were different from traditional arts of various countries they came from.
'In India, the colors are really different and the patterns are really complicated,' Kshitija Ranjan, a student from the UISG, said when the elective workshop in abstract painting was finished.
Despite the differences in art forms, one thing that brought Western and Eastern art forms together was the freedom all participating students had to express themselves.
ACAMIS is a non-profit organization formed to facilitate communication and development between international schools in China and Mongolia. It now has about 40 member schools.
The ACAMIS cultural convention is held every May in different member schools. The ACAMIS Southern Zone Middle School Cultural Convention this year was held in Shenzhen from May 17 to 19 while the ACAMIS Northern Zone Middle School Cultural Convention was held in Suzhou.
