BEIJING, Nov. 24 -- Nearly 90 percent of parents in Shanghai with children under three want better education for their children.
And about 70 percent were not satisfied they could get this from the children's grandparents.
The findings were reported by officials from Shanghai Population and Family Planning Committee at the Shanghai International Maternity and Baby Care Expo yesterday.
The three-day fair has attracted about 100 manufacturers of child products, and nutrition and early learning experts from 11 countries.
At a seminar on early learning, experts from home and abroad shared their experiences.
'There are some 200,000 children under the age of three in the city. Our research found that about 89 percent of the children were being taken care of by grandparents and about 2.3 percent by ayi,' said Xie Lingli, director of the Shanghai Population and Family Planning Committee.
He said that about 70 percent of parents didn't like the quality of education their children were getting and more than 86.7 percent said grandparents, mothers and ayis needed direction.
The seminar heard the city had begun a trial of a community-based early education program last year and, at present, 30 sub-districts were taking part in the scheme.
A team with 200 directors had been established to provide training and guidance to neighborhood education centers.
'The city will have 98 percent of local children below three covered with early education at the community in 2010. To ensure every child can receive the education, we will pay extra attention to children from migrant workers and needy families,' Xie said.
