China Electronics Technology Cooperation International (CETCI), a large state-owned company of China, has signed a contract with Pakistan Infrastructure Development Company (IDC) to jointly build a light rail for Jordan between Amman and the northeastern industrial center of Zarqa.
The 25 km long, two-way light rail, which is to be completed by the end of 2009, has a contract value of 200 million U.S. dollars and is the first such project in Jordan, Yan Lijin, president of the Chinese cooperation, told Xinhua.
The IDC is the general contractor for the rail's building, operation and transfer, and the CETCI is contracted to build the Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) part of the project, Yan said.
According to the committee of Jordan's public transportation, owner of the rail, the light rail project comprises 12 ground stations, one rolling stock section and one depot.
According to the contract, the time limit for the EPC project includes a 20-month construction time, a three-month trial operation and a one-month examination period.
After the completion of the light rail, the metro system will be able to transport 100,000 passengers a day at a speed of 90 km/h, Yan said.
The CETCI's winning of the bid provides useful experience for Chinese enterprises to bid for large overseas projects with their foreign competitors, Yan added.
Saud Nseirat, minister of transportation of the Mideast country, said earlier that a light rail is an economical and environment-friendly way to ease the heavy traffic on the highway between Amman and Zarqa as nearly 52 percent of the country's industry is located in Zarqa while 50 percent of the country's population live in the two cities.
