- New rules for pharmaceutical sector
Date: 31-Oct-2007 Sources: (Shenzhen Daily)
THE Chinese Government has just issued draft standards for the country's pharmaceutical industry to cut pollution, according to the State Environmental Protection Administration and General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine.
The standards consist of six parts including fermentation, chemical synthesis, extraction, bio-engineering, compound medicine and traditional Chinese medicine.
Analysts said that these new rules will force most domestic drug makers to revamp their environmental protection facilities with far-reaching influence on the raw pharmaceutical and chemical synthesis sectors.
As the most competitive medicine on the world market, bulk raw pharmaceuticals usually accompany heavy pollution in order to reduce production cost.
'In particular, tighter environmental protection requirements will threat the profitability of small raw pharmaceutical enterprises,'said Liu Yanming from China Galaxy Securities.
According to the draft, the chemical oxygen demand of fermentation-based drug producers will decrease by more than 80 percent in 2010 to 26,209 tons from 157,177 tons in 2005.
Liu added that resultant cost hikes could prompt industry reorganization and pave the way for further development, citing the voluminous export of vitamin C.
Previously Minister of Construction Wang Guangtao said that China aims to reduce chemical oxygen demand discharge by 10 percent or more within the next five years.
