  • Live vector insects detected in cattle hides from U.S.
    Date: 24-Sep-2007 Sources: (Xinhua Online)

DALIAN, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- Entry-exit inspectors in a northeastern China city said on Sunday that they have detected live vector insects in six batches of cattle hides imported from the United States.

From July 30 to Sept. 6, inspectors found live cheese flies in containers that carried a total of 260 tons of U.S. cattle hides, a material used to make leather shoes, according to the Dayaowan Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau in Dalian of Liaoning Province.

Cheese flies are a kind of insects that could give rise to temporary intestinal myiasis, with diarrhoea, colicky pains and vomiting.

The bureau has treated all the insects by fuming and steaming all the containers and notified receivers to ask shippers for stricter control and prevention on vector insects in their exports.

The bureau said they have intensified inspection over U.S. cattle hides, fuming and steaming every batch of the imports that arrived.
