SHENZHEN Press Group, the local newspaper media giant, signed a strategic cooperation framework agreement with Guangzhou Daily Press Group yesterday, marking the beginning of an intercity coalition between the two mainstream press groups in South China.
The move is seen as a milestone in boosting the press industry in the Pearl River Delta region as well as a breakthrough for newspaper reform and development in China.
The two parties reached agreement in five aspects including the sharing of information and resources in reporting and editing, cooperating in advertising management and expansion, co-sponsoring large-scale social activities, enhancing exchanges in personnel training and upgrading quality, and jointly promoting and exploring new media technologies such as digital technology.
'By forming the alliance we believe the two press groups' advantages will complement each other and achieve a win-win situation,'said Huang Yanglue, president of Shenzhen Press Group, during the signing ceremony yesterday at Shenzhen Press Tower. He also said he hopes more partners of the groups from around the country will join the strategic alliance.
According to Dai Yuqing, chairman of the board of directors of Guangzhou Daily Press Group, feasibility studies showed that the new cooperative approach between press groups would win a bigger market share at lower costs and higher yields, which he expected to be an example for other newspapers to follow.
Founded in September 2002 with the merger of the Shenzhen Special Zone Daily and Shenzhen Economic Daily, Shenzhen Press Group currently owns 10 newspapers, five periodicals, six Web sites and a printing house, accounting for 90 percent of the local market share of print media. The group's annual advertising revenue has reached more than 3 billion yuan (US$391 million).
Guangzhou Daily Press Group, the nation's first newspaper group, was founded in January 1996. Its flagship newspaper, Guangzhou Daily, has a daily circulation of 1.68 million, with advertising revenue topping its counterparts in the country for 13 consecutive years. Advertising revenue reached 1.8 billion yuan in 2006.
